World Food Day

What we eat is one of the most direct ways to act on climate. To mark World Food Day on Friday 16 October, the final day of Brussels Climate Week, we are celebrating restaurants, cafés and caterers across Brussels that are environmentally friendly and socially engaged.

They source locally and seasonally, cut food waste and contribute to the health and quality of life of their neighbourhoods. Many were selected through the Good Food Resto label, alongside vegetarian and vegan venues. Each one below chose to be featured and describes its approach in its own words.

Our World Food Day partner

Good Food Brussels

The Good Food Strategy, led by Bruxelles Environnement

The Good Food 2 Strategy aims to transform Brussels’ food system and make it more sustainable by 2030. Its two main goals are:

  • to ensure that everyone in Brussels has access to healthy, affordable food that meets their needs, while guaranteeing fair prices for all actors across the food chain;
  • to support food professionals in developing supply chains that combine sustainability, economic vitality and quality jobs.

The strategy addresses several key challenges:

  • Environmental: reducing greenhouse gas emissions by tackling food waste, promoting agroecological production, supporting local food chains and encouraging a shift towards fewer animal-based proteins. It also helps protect biodiversity through agroecological practices and the development of community gardens and orchards.
  • Economic: strengthening local food systems creates sustainable, high-quality jobs that cannot be relocated abroad. This benefits not only farmers, but also food processors, logistics providers, transport services, retailers and the restaurant sector.
  • Social and health: improving food quality and making healthy food accessible to everyone helps reduce long-term health costs and supports a fair and inclusive food transition.

Botanical gastronomy

humus x hortense

Rue de Vergnies 2, 1050 Ixelles

With more than 170 different regional ingredients in the tasting menu, humus x hortense creates a sense of place deeply rooted in the humus-rich soil of regenerative farms. Every dish and botanical drink is a constantly evolving expression of 24 micro-seasons. Plants are precious delicacies, freshly harvested at the wild farm Le Monde des Mille Couleurs and given a new life in the hands of chef Nicolas Decloedt.

Time is the core ingredient of the nature-inspired menu and an active participant in the transformation of food. Cool-climate preservation techniques allow flavours to develop, textures to change and complexities to emerge. Twenty years of botanical research and fine-tuning of plant-based recipes are condensed in one tasting menu. Already in 2008, the visionary culinary couple Nicolas Decloedt and Caroline Baerten coined the concept of ‘botanical gastronomy’.

Natural cider is the most sustainable alcoholic beverage, made from 100% pure juice of apples grown on high-stem trees that live for more than 100 years without any chemicals and without watering. We support and promote small local cider makers who actively protect biodiversity with their traditional orchards. All our food and other drinks are sourced with the same philosophy: great taste, as local as possible, pesticide-free, zero waste.
