Building Better Places: Sustainable Construction in Action
Urban Day · An official side event of Brussels Climate Week
Thursday 15 October 2026 | 15:00 – 17:30 | Maison de la Poste, Tour & Taxis
Overview
The future of construction isn’t about building more — it’s about building smarter, more sustainably, and with people at the centre. From planning and procurement to materials recovery and reuse, sustainable construction is reshaping how we design, build, and renew our cities, towns, and regions. Circularity is a critical part of that transformation, helping reduce waste, lower emissions, strengthen resilience, and make better use of finite resources.
But creating truly sustainable places goes beyond materials and buildings — it is about improving quality of life, supporting healthier, accessible communities, and creating environments where people can not only live, but truly thrive. This interactive session brings together local and regional leaders, planners, policymakers, developers, construction companies, and material providers to explore how sustainable construction can move from ambition and pilot projects to mainstream practice across Europe’s urban areas and communities.
What to Expect
Through expert insights and facilitated roundtable discussions, participants will examine three critical dimensions of the transition: embedding sustainability and circularity at the earliest stages of planning and design, creating the market conditions that enable innovation and investment to scale, and building more resilient, liveable communities that deliver tangible benefits for people.
Key Outcomes
- Understand the role of planning, policy, and procurement in enabling circular construction
- Learn from leading city and industry examples
- Identify barriers and opportunities for scaling circular approaches
- Build connections across the construction value chain
- Generate practical recommendations for accelerating the transition
